USDOT Number Decals & DOT Lettering in Murfreesboro, Tennessee

If your truck is marked wrong, it does not matter how good the rest of your operation is — a roadside inspection can put you out of service over two inches of vinyl. We cut DOT lettering in-house, we get it right the first time, and a standard set is usually ready in two to three business days.

What Federal Law Actually Requires

The governing rule is 49 CFR 390.21. It is short, and most violations we see come from one of these four points being missed.

The legal name — exactly as filed

The door must show the legal name or a single trade name of the carrier operating the vehicle, and it must match what is on file with FMCSA for that USDOT number. A shortened version, an old DBA, or a logo by itself does not satisfy the rule.

“USDOT” before the number

The identification number must be preceded by the letters USDOT. Just the digits is not compliant, and neither is “DOT#” on its own — a surprisingly common and completely avoidable ticket.

Both sides, sharp contrast

The marking goes on both sides of the power unit, in a color that contrasts sharply with the vehicle. Dark grey on a black truck fails. We check contrast before we cut and will tell you if your brand color will not hold up.

Legible from 50 feet — and stays that way

It must be readable during daylight from 50 feet while the vehicle is stopped, and it must be maintained. Faded, peeling, or half-scraped lettering is a violation even if it was perfect when applied. That is why we use outdoor-rated cast vinyl, not the cheap calendared stock.

How big do the letters have to be?

The federal rule is a legibility standard, not a fixed letter height — readable from 50 feet in daylight, stationary. In practice 2-inch letters are the accepted size that meets it on most vans and trucks, and that is what we cut by default. On box trucks and larger units we size up so the marking reads cleanly from the shoulder of the road.

Tennessee Carriers: Intrastate Counts Too

A lot of Rutherford County operators assume that staying inside Tennessee means the rules do not apply. Tennessee has adopted the federal USDOT requirement for intrastate carriers domiciled in the state.

You generally need a USDOT number if…

  • The vehicle has a GVWR of 10,001 lbs or more
  • It is designed to carry more than 8 passengers for compensation
  • It is designed to carry 15 or more passengers, driver included
  • It hauls hazardous materials in placardable quantities

Where it gets enforced

Tennessee Commercial Vehicle Enforcement checks markings at inspection stations, weigh stations, and roadside stops across the state. A marking violation can mean a fine or an out-of-service order that stops the truck where it sits — which costs far more than the decals ever did.

We print decals — we are not a compliance consultancy. Confirm your specific registration requirements with FMCSA or the Tennessee Department of Revenue. What we guarantee is that what we put on your door matches the information you give us and meets the marking standard.

Send Us These Five Things and We Can Cut Today

Most delays happen because one of these is missing. Text them to (615) 241-6683 and we will confirm the layout before we cut anything.

1. Legal name
Exactly as registered with FMCSA against your USDOT number.
2. USDOT number
And your MC number if you run under authority.
3. A photo of the door
Straight on, whole door in frame. This is how we size the layout.
4. Vehicle color
So we pick a vinyl that contrasts sharply enough to pass.
5. Anything else that has to appear — GVWR, unit or truck number, TN intrastate markings, or a logo you want alongside the compliant lettering.

DOT Lettering Questions We Get Every Week

Can I just use magnets instead?

For a vehicle that legitimately moves between marked and unmarked use, removable markings can be acceptable — but they still have to meet every requirement while the vehicle is operating, and they have to actually stay on. We see far more magnet-related violations than vinyl ones, because magnets fade, curl, get left in the shop, and blow off at highway speed. If the truck is a work truck every day, cut vinyl is cheaper over its life and it will not fail an inspection because someone forgot to put it back on.

My lettering is peeling. Is that actually a violation?

Yes. The rule requires the marking to be kept legible, not just to have been legible on day one. Peeling, faded, or partially removed lettering is cited the same as no lettering.

I bought a used truck with someone else's DOT number on it.

That has to come off before you operate it — displaying another carrier's number is a serious problem, not a cosmetic one. We remove old lettering, clean the adhesive and ghosting, and apply your set in the same visit. Bring it in and we will quote the removal honestly; older vinyl on a sun-faded door sometimes leaves a shadow that only a panel repaint fully fixes.

Can you ship if I am not near Murfreesboro?

Yes. We ship sets pre-masked and ready to apply with application instructions and a squeegee. Send a straight-on photo of the door and we will size it correctly. Most drivers apply a door set themselves in about twenty minutes.

I am adding trucks all year. Do I have to re-quote every time?

No — that is exactly what our fleet program is for. We store your artwork, lock your per-vehicle price for twelve months, and every truck you add comes out matching the last one. Most of our fleet customers text a photo of the new truck and we schedule it. Call us and we will send the locked rate sheet.
